White Rock dive site – Koh Tao

White Rock is one of the largest and most famous dive sites on Koh Tao. With its easy diving conditions, diverse underwater landscape, and exceptional marine life, it is a favorite destination for both beginner and experienced divers. The site is equally popular for day dives and night dives, offering a completely different experience after sunset.

White Rock features a series of large granite boulders, coral-covered reef sections, and sandy areas that provide habitat for an impressive variety of marine species. Thanks to its moderate depth and generally calm conditions, it is an excellent location for Open Water training, Advanced Open Water Adventure Dives, and relaxed fun dives.

During the day, divers can encounter schools of fusiliers, butterflyfish, angelfish, parrotfish, triggerfish, and blue-spotted stingrays, while green sea turtles are frequent visitors. After dark, White Rock transforms into one of Koh Tao’s best night dive sites, where hunting barracudas, sleeping parrotfish, moray eels, octopuses, and colorful nudibranchs become active, creating a completely different underwater atmosphere.

Location & Diving Conditions

• Location: White Rock is located just off the west coast of Koh Tao, slightly south of the neighboring island of Koh Nang Yuan.

• Depth: Depths range from 5 meters (16 ft) at the tops of the rock formations to around 22 meters (72 ft), with a few deeper sandy areas reaching 26–28 meters (85–92 ft). The average dive depth is a comfortable 16 meters (52 ft).

• Visibility: Visibility is generally excellent, typically ranging between 10 and 25 meters (33–82 ft).

• Current: Usually little to no current. Thanks to its sheltered location, White Rock offers comfortable diving conditions and can be enjoyed year-round, making it suitable for divers of all experience levels.

Topography

White Rock takes its name from a light-colored granite pinnacle located on the northeastern side of the reef, which rises to just below the water’s surface. The dive site itself consists of two large granite formations—a northern and a southern pinnacle—surrounded by healthy coral reefs.

Between these two rock formations lies a broad, shallow coral garden intersected by sandy channels and patches, creating a varied underwater landscape that supports a rich diversity of marine life. Because of its large size and multiple routes, no two dives at White Rock are ever quite the same, making it a favorite destination for repeat visits.

Nearby dive sites include Hin Pee Wee and the famous HTMS Sattakut Wreck, allowing experienced divers to explore several of Koh Tao’s premier dive sites in the same area.

Marine Life

White Rock is teeming with marine life and is renowned for its exceptional biodiversity. Its healthy hard and soft coral reefs provide the perfect habitat for a wide variety of tropical fish and larger marine species.

Pelagic Fish & Predators

Large schools of great barracuda and trevallies are frequently seen cruising through the blue water surrounding the pinnacles, often hunting smaller baitfish. Their presence makes every dive exciting, especially for underwater photographers.

Reef Life

The reef is home to an abundance of angelfish, butterflyfish, fusiliers, parrotfish, and many other colorful tropical species. Hidden among the granite boulders and coral-covered crevices, divers can often spot white-eyed moray eels peeking out from their shelters.

Sandy Bottom

The sandy areas between the reef formations are a favorite resting place for blue-spotted stingrays. Divers may also encounter the striking banded sea krait, a highly venomous but generally shy sea snake that is commonly seen hunting among the rocks and coral.

Highlights

Green sea turtles are regular visitors to White Rock, often feeding on soft corals or cruising peacefully around the reef. During the breeding season, divers should keep a respectful distance from the territorial Titan Triggerfish, which aggressively defend their nests. With a bit of luck, you may even experience a memorable encounter with a whale shark, making an already spectacular dive truly unforgettable.
