Mango Bay (Ao Muang)

Mango Bay, locally known as Ao Muang, is one of the most scenic and accessible bays on the northern tip of Koh Tao. It is widely regarded as one of the island’s premier locations for beginner divers, snorkelers, and training courses due to its calm conditions, excellent visibility, and gently sloping seabed. The bay takes its name from the mango trees that once covered the lush hillsides surrounding the area, which still remain green and densely forested today.

The bay is naturally sheltered, which significantly reduces wave action and current compared to more exposed sites around Koh Tao. This makes it particularly suitable for first-time divers and confined-water skill practice, as conditions are usually predictable and forgiving throughout most of the year. Entry is typically made from a mooring line or dive boat, and descents are smooth due to the gradual change in depth.

Key Details

• Depth: Approximately 2 to 15 meters. The seabed slopes very gently, allowing for extended shallow-water training and easy navigation for beginners.

• Skill Level: Beginner to Open Water. Commonly used for Discover Scuba Diving programs, Open Water certification dives, and refresher dives.

• Visibility: Often among the best on Koh Tao, frequently reaching 15–25 meters depending on season and plankton levels.

• Currents: Generally very mild, though slight drift can occur near the reef edges during tidal changes.

• Topography: A wide, horseshoe-shaped bay with a sandy central plateau surrounded by rocky reef slopes on both the eastern and western sides. The outer edges gradually drop into deeper sections with more structured coral growth.

Marine Life

Mango Bay is often described as a “nursery reef” due to the abundance of juvenile marine life found in the shallow protected waters. The calm environment provides ideal conditions for young fish to grow and shelter among corals.

• Juvenile Fish Schools: Large aggregations of yellowtail barracuda, sergeant majors, fusiliers, and damselfish are commonly seen. These fish are often unafraid of divers and may approach closely, especially in training areas.

• Coral Ecosystem: The reef slopes host a mix of hard corals including table corals, staghorn corals, brain corals, and mushroom corals. The diversity of coral shapes creates many hiding places for smaller marine species.

• Macro Life: Careful observation reveals Christmas tree worms, nudibranchs, shrimp species, and small reef crabs tucked into coral branches and rock crevices.

• Sandy Bottom Species: The central sandy area supports a surprising amount of life, including gobies, shrimp-associated burrows, and blue-spotted ribbontail stingrays that often rest partially buried in the sand. Seahorses are occasionally spotted but require a trained eye to locate.

• Seasonal Bait Balls: At certain times of year, massive schools of small baitfish such as anchovies or silversides form swirling, coordinated formations that shift rapidly to avoid predators. These events can attract larger predatory fish to the bay.

Conditions & Diving Experience

Dives in Mango Bay are typically relaxed and slow-paced, making it ideal for skill development and underwater comfort building. The sandy bottom allows instructors to conduct training exercises without damaging coral, while the surrounding reef provides enough structure to keep dives visually engaging.

Because of its popularity, the site can be moderately busy during peak training hours, especially in high season. However, the bay is large enough that groups can usually spread out comfortably.

Access & Location

Mango Bay is located on the northern coast of Koh Tao and is accessible only by boat. The approach itself is scenic, with dramatic green hills rising steeply from the coastline and clear turquoise water visible from the surface.
